Castillo de San Marcos

The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest and largest masonry fortress in the country and this iconic structure stands right in downtown St. Augustine. Built between 1672 and 1695, the Castillo de San Marcos is a large Spanish stone fortress on the western shore of Matanzas Bay.

Soak up the history spanning over 340 years that this National Monument that sits on 20.5 acres. Take a walk through the grounds, which includes rooms that once housed soldiers and prisoners, a large interior courtyard, gun deck, and more. There are daily programs and demonstrations, like cannon firings and weapon demonstrations.
